First Aid is About Prevention

First Aid is About Prevention
by Sheriff Tony Thompson (Ret)
May 26th, 2026

Taking first aid into the wilderness is critically important because, in remote environments, even minor injuries can quickly become serious when professional medical help is far away. A small cut can become infected, a twisted ankle can leave someone stranded, dehydration can escalate rapidly, and untreated injuries can turn a manageable situation into a survival emergency.

In the wilderness, time matters. You may be hours — or even days — from emergency responders, cell service, or transportation. Having first aid supplies and the knowledge to use them allows you to stabilize injuries, control bleeding, prevent infection, reduce pain, and keep someone functional long enough to get help or safely exit the area.

First aid is also about prevention. Proper treatment early on can stop a small problem from becoming life-threatening. Blisters, burns, insect stings, heat exhaustion, hypothermia, cuts, sprains, and allergic reactions are all common outdoor issues that can often be managed effectively with the right supplies.

Beyond the physical benefits, first aid provides confidence and peace of mind. Knowing you can respond to emergencies helps you stay calm and think clearly under pressure — and in survival situations, mindset can be just as important as equipment.

Experienced outdoorsmen understand that preparation isn’t optional in the wild. A first aid kit may seem insignificant until the moment you desperately need it.

“The best survival gear is the gear you have before something goes wrong.”
